Type L vs Type M Copper: The Wall-Thickness Call That Passes Inspection

Type M is thinner and cheaper for above-ground residential, but commercial and underground water lines almost always call for Type L. Read the spec before you bid the pipe.

Type L and Type M copper carry the same water and use the same fittings, so the whole decision comes down to wall thickness and what your local code and spec will accept. That makes it a deceptively simple call with a real dollar figure attached. Guess wrong in either direction and it costs you: bid Type M on a job that inspects to Type L and you tear out a wall on your own dime, bid Type L where Type M passes and you hand margin to a competitor who read the code more carefully. The pipe is identical from the outside, which is exactly why so many subs get it wrong in a takeoff and only find out at rough-in inspection.

The numbers that separate them

On half-inch pipe, Type M runs a 0.028-inch wall while Type L runs 0.040 inches, and Type K, the heaviest, runs 0.049 inches. That thicker wall gives Type L a meaningfully higher pressure rating and more metal to corrode through before you get a pinhole. In drawn temper, half-inch Type L is rated near 1,200 psi working pressure against roughly 825 psi for Type M, and that headroom is what commercial engineers are protecting when they spec the heavier wall. Color coding keeps them straight on the truck and in the trench: Type M prints red, Type L prints blue, and Type K prints green. If your crew is pulling pipe off a rack with three colors on it, that stripe is the difference between the pipe you bid and the pipe that fails.

When Type M is the value play

Type M costs less per foot because there is less copper in it, and for above-ground potable water in many residential jurisdictions it is fully code-compliant. On a wood-frame multifamily job where the plumbing spec allows Type M, using it instead of Type L can trim real dollars off a large copper takeoff, and on a project with hundreds of feet of half-inch and three-quarter-inch supply, that thinner wall adds up to a number that shows in your bid. Where copper prices are volatile, choosing the lighter wall is a direct hedge on material cost, because you are buying less metal per foot at whatever the market is doing that week. The savings are real. They only exist, though, if the authority having jurisdiction actually signs off on Type M for that application, so the value play starts with confirming the code, not with the price sheet.

Why Type L is the commercial default

Many commercial specs, and a lot of local codes, require Type L for underground water service, for lines that get pressure-tested hard, and for anything subject to mechanical stress. Underground is the big one: you do not want the thinner wall buried in aggressive soil where you cannot inspect it, because a pinhole in a wall you cannot see is a callback that involves an excavator. Type L is also the standard for medical gas and higher-demand systems where the margin for error is thin and the inspection is strict. When the engineer specs Type L, that is not a suggestion you can value-engineer away, and substituting down to Type M to shave the copper is how you fail an inspection and eat the rework. On commercial work, Type L is the default for a reason, and the reason is that the heavier wall keeps passing where the lighter one does not.

Pull the spec before you price

The mistake that costs subs money is guessing. Pull the plumbing spec, confirm the local amendment, and price the pipe the inspector will actually accept before you commit a number. The upcharge on Type L is always cheaper than tearing out a wall of Type M that never should have gone in.

The bid mistake that goes both ways

The money on this decision moves in both directions, and that is what makes it easy to lose. Bid Type M on a job that inspects to Type L and you are looking at a rip-and-replace behind finished walls, on your own dime, plus the schedule hit while you re-rough and wait on a re-inspection. Bid Type L on residential work where Type M passes and you never lose the money in the field, you lose it in the bid, against a competitor who read the same code you did and priced the lighter wall. Both errors are avoidable with the same fifteen minutes of homework: confirm what the local jurisdiction accepts for this specific application before the number leaves your office. Copper is too expensive a line item to price on a guess, and the pipe looks identical enough that a guess is exactly what an untrained takeoff amounts to.
